The history of olive oil goes back to ancient times. For over 4000 years olives have been cultivated and turned into oil that is used in religious, gastronomic and symbolic rituals. Throughout the Mediterranean the veneration of this tree has defined our culture, our cuisine and our way of life.
The history of Diezdedos oil is much more recent, but no less intense. Diezdedos was conceived in a dream cradled by the seashore. José María Rodas’ dream of creating the best extra virgin olive oil in the world. As simple and yet complicated as that.
In 2008 the dream began to take shape. Several adjacent properties were purchased in the municipality of Cretas (Teruel), where olive trees were first introduced by the Arabs hundreds of years ago. The location and climate were perfect, but the terrain needed to be changed to prepare it for cultivating olive trees. In consultation with the IRTA research institute, five varieties of olive tree were selected to be grown on the land: Arbequina, Empeltre, Arroniz, Frantoio and Corbella. No other estate cultivates these varieties together. It was an exciting challenge and a great responsibility.
The work to prepare the land for cultivation took one year. By 2009 the landscape had been completely transformed and converted into today’s valley. Over the following years the trees began to grow rapidly.
In 2012 the first harvest and production of olive oil took place. The entire Diezdedos team was involved in picking and selecting the best olives by hand in order to turn them into premium extra virgin oil. The dream had finally come true.
